Go cartridge. Either can be a royal pain coming from a sand filter honestly depending on your situation.
I have one of each (2 inground pools different locations)...just upgrpaded the DE in one ...simply because it was de before and got a crazy deal on a pentair composite de filter. Also kept it DE as it's uncoveered florida
pool surrouduned by tropicals, every summer is a debris explosion, lots sand, hurricanes, monsoons, etc. Backwashing frequently. Other is cartridge screened pool, it's maintenance free and very infrequent cartridge cleanings even needed.
The only time i want to toss the cartridge off a cliff is florida rainy season when gets out of hand if you have a chlorine problem, which is super easy to do when you get busy then it becomes daily cleanings to clean things up.. If you avoid that...
it's a winner and the cost of a filter (which has gotten crazy) is offset some by buying de annually. If i had a cartridge at the ununclosed pool i'm sure i'd want to throw it off a cliff during the summer though....leaf catcher gets most, but lots of wind blown debris sand makes it way
into there.
But breaking down a DE annually or so is no fun either.
Couple things depending on pool either way though , leaf catcher is beforehand and may look into those cylone prefilters....don't know anything about them but i'm sure they work like dust wood working, etc cylone filters, reduce flow
some at expense of pre filters and extending filter cleanings.
