We finally have our new pool open. I have been a little bit of a slacker with testing the water. I have tested chlorine and ph and I do have a t100 kit. I know some cya was added in the fall and I think that is the big one I need to understand most. I started to test this morning and now have to go see grand kids. So, I think my salt generator is really working. It looks like my chlorine is at 10 or so. My ph is at 8.2.

I know from aquariums that I keep that my source water is hard, 20 or so ppm both carbonate hardness and general hardness and 350 or so from a TDS perspective so 8.2 does not surprise

I promise to run the rest of the test in the morning. My big question at this point is how is the best way to control chlorine generation? Our heat pump was installed Wednesday the pump ran at about 1700 rpm for two days and then I dropped to to 1000 when water got to 84 degrees

Water is crystal clear. I bought a dolphin e10 and the fine filter. It seems to be doing a good job

When I get tests run I will enter here and into pool math

Mike,

You adjust the percent of output on the SWCG to match the amount of FC (chlorine) that you use each day.. A salt system will just generate the amount of chlorine you tell it to make. It has no brain.. You have to test and tell the SWCG to produce more or less chlorine based upon your test results..

If you have ScreenLogic you would use the following Screen...

View media item 1963
If you do not have ScreenLogic.. use Menu, Settings, IntelliChlor.. This will bring up a screen that allows you to adjust the % for the Pool and the Spa.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Tests
Chlorine 10 ppm
Ph 8.2
Ta 120
Ch 250
Cya read as zero. I used the sock method afterwards and added a 12 wide worth of cya. Pool math said 3 pounds or so of cya. I will re test later

Speed stir is a thing of beauty!

Alright, here are my latest results. Pool math indicates 15 ounces of acid. I will do that. What next?

Temperature 83
Ph 8.2
Chlorine 17
Cc 2.5
CH 225
TA 170
Cya 40. I will add more here as well with a goal of 70 or so
CSI .73

I assume you added enough CYA to get to a total of 70 ppm, correct? Are you saying that clouded your pool? It should have had no affect.

Regardless, with a CYA of 70 ppm, your FC should be about 4 or 5 ppm (roughly) and it is quite elevated at 17 ppm. That's OK because you need that extra FC to reduce your CC test result to .5 ppm or less. Simply let the FC come down on it's own to that normal 4-5 level but you should test for FC and CC each day to make sure you CC comes on down.

Thanks, yes I was referring to when I added cya. That cloud dispersed as it should.
The amount of cya I added should get me real close to 70. I will test again in a couple of days on that one

I did drop the percent on the salt generator and will keep testing chlorine

I appreciate your wisdom

Latest readings

Temperature 83
Ph 8
Chlorine 18
Combined chlorine 1
Calcium 250
Carbonate 120
Cya 80
CSI .21

I adjusted the swg down a little more to 15%. I don’t see any algae. There are organic debris that comes in under the auto cover. I think we are going to regret one little patch of grass

We had it open today. I will test again to see if it went down any.

We have an old Labrador that loves the water but can’t do the water. Unfortunately right now it is closed most of the time to keep him alive.

I did find some small black dots on the steps today. I read the black algae article. Our pool is fiberglass so I hope that is not what is keeping that high

New question

I have been using pump run time and lowering the percent in the swg in order to get free chlorine to come into line. I have it down to 8 or so. Tonight I noticed flow alarms on the swg and the heat pump.

Is this something I should expect to see when the run time on the pump is off? Should I run the pump24/7 and have the night run cycle be low?

your swg and heat pump are set to turn off when your pump does, correct
You also need the correct flow rate for the heat pump and the swg when the pump is running
