liquid is used up faster the dichlor normal?

I have been trying to track how much FC my tub uses in both idle and when in use. I just got my CYA up to about 40 and transitioned to liquid. So far I have noticed that the chlorine used at at idle has doubled since transitioning. Is that normal?

For example I was using about 1FC overnight with Dichlor, but 2.5 overnight with liquid. I know my Ozonator is eating it up, but I didn't realize there would be a variance between the two.

Chlorine once dissolved is just chlorine and it doesn't know how it got there.

Usually it's the owner not realizing how much FC was added between 2 sources. Overnight loss takes UV and the FC/CYA relationship out of the question.

Not overnight for natural UV. Any Ozone or UV systems would burn off the same amount of FC per X hours regardless of which way you added it.

Valid question. I measured where it was after use and then added chlorine by volume and used the calculator to know the amount. I'll start measuring both timed now. Do I have to weight a specific amount of time after adding liquid before measuring again?

Chlorine is probably well mixed in 30 seconds in a hot tub. A couple minutes is plenty.

After use, and for some time after use, you may see FC loss while it breaks down any residual bather waste. It's real tricky to pin down what to expect because you aren't the same you between 2 soaks. This time you're sweaty, next time there's more hair product/ laundry residuals, the time after that there's 3 of you.

It may have contributed to the dichlor seeming more effective.

Okay. So even right after I exit if I add more liquid I can test within a few minutes or should i wait until it is done battling my waste?

You only need to do this “double check” once for the jug of liquid chlorine you have.
Once you determine it’s potency you can just assume that % for the subsequent doses from that jug.
Going forward make sure to check the dates when buying liquid chlorine & don’t buy stuff that’s being stored outside in the heat/sun.

There is a way but its kind of a pain - easier to just do a follow up test right after you add from a new jug if you suspect it’s degraded then adjust poolmath % going forward.
most 12.5% doesn’t stay quite that potent for long.
Using 12% in poolmath is probably more accurate most of the time even when its fresh.
