Light Niche

Hello Everyone,

Hope you all are doing fine. I'm new to this site and this is my first post.

I am currently remodeling my gunite pool and am leaning towards getting a saltwater generator. My niche is metallic likely copper because the conduit is copper.

Do I need to change the niche to PVC?

If I ended up keeping it, what LED light recommendations do you have for a 9.5 inch diameter niche?

Hello Dwight, welcome to TFP
You don't have to change the niche, unless you choose to do so? Most likely the niche itself not copper, but your bonding wire is copper which surrounds the pool and ties everything into the pump.

Thank you, Maddie. It does look like it’s cooper conduit. This is an old pool with all copper plumbing. Please see pictures.

You do not need to change your light niche if it is in good condition.

Metallic light fixtures are used to be the water bond which is required. The light may have been your water bond. During the renovation you need to determine where the water bond in your pool is and ensure you maintain it.

Thank you, ajw22. Would it be overkill if I used copper mesh around the perimeter for bonding?

Cooper mesh goes onto a deck before a concrete pour to bond the deck to the pool bonding grid. It is not a substitute for a water bond.

You can create a water bond from a metallic light fixture, some plastic light fixtures have 9 square inches of metal on the outside to give you a water bond, there are water bonds that install in a skimmer, or that install in a pipe that always has pool water.
