So a last month, we had about 4" of rain in 1.5 hours and this caused pool to overfill. I didn't think too much of it. I just drained, checked my numbers and rebalanced. This was also in the heat and full sun of August in Orlando. I noticed my CYA was low (I now realize it was most likely at 50, not 60 like I thought). I had to start to run my SWG IC-40 at about 80% (14 hours) just to maintain chlorine levels. Then levels started to go down and I cranked it to 100%. My levels started to go down. I had the same thing happen the month before, so rather than assume that the SWG was bad, I started the SLAM process (I did a SLAM the month prior). SLAM process was fairly quick and easy. Probably 2 days. Levels all worked out. I also must have let my eyes get used to what I thought clear was. After the SLAM process I was reminded of what clear was again!
Water temps are regularly at 85-87F and I am in full sun (under screen) from 8AM to 8PM (rear of house faces south).
My thought is that I allowed CYA to get too low for the hot summer and sun. This caused more chlorine burnout than I thought and then there was an algae bloom getting ready to pop. Now that I am seeing the SWG raising my chlorine levels when only running at 40% level, I feel better.
I am slowly bringing up CYA. Even though I was reading 60 ppm, I was rounding up when it was between 50 and 60. I think in the early stages of this scenario, I was closer to the 50 line. Recently, I have been midway between 50 and 60. Now after adding cyanuric acid over the past week, I am almost at the 60 line. I hope to get it to just above the 70 line. I just added another pound today.
If it wasn't for TFP, I know I would be chasing by tail at the pool store!!! Thank you!
My results today:
Cl - 8.0
CC - 0
Salt - 3600
pH - 8.0 (added acid to bring down)
TA - 60
CH - 270
CYA - 60 (right at line)
Temp - 80F
