Just starting the process - This is the idea, let me know what you think on the over all design and layout. It will be about 100 perimeter with a 3.6 to 6 ft. depth with Baja shelf depth still to be decided but currently thinking 9 inches. -

Update 3/31/2022 - Got my initial design and equipment list -
Update 4/18/2022 - Engineering plans completed, equipment list modified slightly, City application permit is being submitted this week. Should be able to start getting quotes soon so I can get a good idea how much this is going to cost.
Update 4/26/2022 - Permit submitted to City, Obtaining quotes. Pool Equipment including heater and water/fire bowls etc came in at $23k, from what I can tell that's not to bad even though it seems expensive.

Consider 3.5' minimum depth. 3' is too shallow for any swimming with hands hitting the bottom of the pool.

Confirm with builders you are specifying water depth to the middle of the skimmer and not to top of bond beam.

I think it has a terrible grill location. You'll be walking through the party carrying trays of food, and the dog would LOVE for you to get bumped or trip. There ain't no 5 second rule with a 2 second dog around.

Other than that, it looks AMAZING. (y)

Also, please meet out friend @kimkats She is rather fond of builds and making them sparkle.

@thewolf56 - What do you think my friend? I was following your build and got some of my inspiration from you. Wanted to keep the design more rectangle/modern to match the way my wife has the house designed.

I really like the overall design. Classy styling with sharp lines.

I'm no expert by any means, so take these questions with a grain of salt:
  • Being in Laveen, do you have a view of South Mountain. If so, does the yard take that into consideration?
  • Do you have kids that will be jumping into the pool? If so, I would add a little more deck on the house side of the deep end and maybe towards the pergola to jump from, otherwise the depth may not really come into use.
Only other comment would be regarding the grill placement. The only angle in your yard really is the pathway to the pergola. Is there a reason you want it angled like that? When doing my research, I thought that you want the outdoor kitchen to be convenient (so that you will actually use it), but you do not want to have it in the middle of a major pathway. It may work better to have the grill perpendicular to the house and further to the right of that patio area.

Just remember that everyone has a different opinion of what they want in a backyard and most people have to make some concessions in their design. At the end of the day, you and your family are the only ones that need to be happy with it. You'll learn things throughout the build process. Some thing's you'll regret, other things you will find out won't really work as planned and may have to come up with a different solution.

I also think you made a good choice in your selection of consultant and his inspections have already been helpful. Even though we spoke about pool depth being water depth, make sure you discuss the depth with the excavators (especially) when it is dig time. I saw on a Facebook group where a person in Gilbert was doing an O/B with a popular company that also included inspections, but she was upset because she wanted a 5'6" water depth, but the excavation was only 5'9" deep. The worst part is, she had a post-excavation inspection, but apparently nobody measured the depth. She did not find out about the issue until after rebar was installed and plumbers were setting the main drain and told her that they could not set it to the depth she wanted.

Good luck!

I also love your design! I like the benches where they are. I would make sure to have tile edge makers all along them to help people see them before they jump in from that side.

The fire pit area.............LOVE it and have already picked out MY seat there LOL I would make sure there is enough room on all side to put chairs as wanted. I think people will want to sit in chairs instead of on the stone benches unless you have some nice cushions.

-grill-yeah that needs to be move off to the side. Someone will run into that bad boy where it is now.

yes..................lets really think this through............how wide will the walkway be from the corner of the grill to the edge of the grass? The pic makes it look quite narrow but that could just be prospective.

You don’t need the Cyclone when you have a 520 sq ft filter.

Consider getting the IntelliCenter. It should cost around $500 more then the EasyTouch + Screenlogic. The ET is a 20 year old system while the IntelliCenter came out in 2020 and gets software updates from Pentair.

I agree with the intellicenter comment, but would say keep the cyclone. Our environment sees a ton of sand and silt that other areas are not accustomed to from the dust storms we get every year, and that stuff is abrasive.

I would re-think the UV/Ozone as well. Lots of good articles here and if you have swam in a salt-water pool that is well-balanced, there is no odor of chloramines or anything else that makes your skin feel like it is being over-sanitized.

So yes upgrade intellicenter, keep the cyclone makes sense but on the UV/Ozone is that a waste of money or should I keep it? I'm not sure what you were saying on that.

It's a waste. A pretty big chunk of change at that. The commercial units on public pools work well but you don't even want to know what they cost. Their rinky dink residential cousins equate to a light bulb and someone blowing bubbles through a straw.

Totally agree!

The MultiCyclone is inexpensive, requires no power/wiring/configuration and traps a lot of sand/dirt. It takes just seconds to clean the MultiCyclone and everything that ends up in the MultiCyclone doesn't end up in your primary filter.

I have the 520 sq ft Pentair Cartridge filter and still went with the cyclone.

I did not go with UV or Ozone on my build. Here are a couple of good articles on those topics:
