I have a pool installed in 2008. It’s never needed any work on the valves or actuators, but today I noticed the raised spa was over full. Strange. Then I realized one of the valves is in the wrong position, directing all of the water from the filter to the spa jets. The valve isn’t moving when switching between spa and pool mode using the Aqualink RS. it also won’t move using the override button on the actuator. I removed the actuator and was able to manually move the valve so that I can run the pool. My questions: How do I tell if the actuator is bad or if there’s no power to it from the Aqua Link RS controller? If the actuator is bad, do I have to replace the entire thing or is there a kit to rebuild it? Online it looks like these things are $240 per. I want to make sure I’m not buying an actuator unnecessarily.
Thanks in advance for any advice or pointers you can give me.

Swap the RETURN and INTAKE actuator plugs in the Aqualink as a test to confirm the problem is at the actuator and not the Aqualink.

There is no rebuild kit but the problem is sometimes a bad micro switch. Read Valve Actuators - Further Reading

Thanks! That’s a lot of info. I’ll have to look at it again on Monday (leaving town tomorrow) but I think that answered my questions plus some I didn’t know I had. I probably won’t be able to work on it until Monday though.

Can I just switch these two connectors that say intake and return to check the actuators and prove the problem isn’t with the Aqualink RS controller? Obviously I’ll cut power first before trying this if that’s the right thing to do.

Yes.

Yes.

I switched the leads on the Aqualink RS. The suction valve still moves but the return valve doesn’t. So I reopened the nonworking actuator. Even though it’s from 2008, to my untrained eye it still looks like new inside and out (maybe because my pool equipment is indoors). Anyway, I put everything back as it was originally, restored power, and ordered an actuator. Thanks for all the help.
