Just getting started Size Depth Purpose

I think the dropoff is a bad idea. I'd leave it all shallow b4 I did that. Remember you can shape the transition however you want. I like the circle shape and you could make it not so round where the meet up to main pool is. You are worried about transition being too much. 3.6 to 4 ft over 13 ft is nothing. I go to 6ft deep over 15ft and we have no issue standing on it anywhere. You can go to 4ft in 5 feet and you are talking an inch heavy per foot.....not noticable. As said walking backwards in a game and stepping into the recess doesn't seem good to me.

On another note u said the ecofinish is fine on the wall panels. I'm a contractor but not pools... I've never heard of this and I'm curious. I personally think its a bad idea no offense at all. How do they keep the pool base and walls from moving and not breaking the finish and even the wall seams? It's also very expensive compared to a liner. We have builders on here who apply it I'd love to hear an opinion. I'm guessing you dont care for a liner for a particular reason?
Yeah, no liner. Ecofinish is our preferred way to go. Also as for the "drop off" we're talking 16" Perhaps even less. We'll ramp it a little, but it's not really necessary. I don't mind "falling" in the water. :) Feeling pretty good about it at this point. Yes I admit it's a little "specific" for a deep end, but the kids will make use of it. I might as well. :)

Everyone, please keep in mind that since my pool will not be deep enough "to dive" into. It's only going to need to be deep enough to do cannonballs and flips into from the deck. What depth is that? Some are saying 4' some 5' and others 6'. I only want it deep enough to jump into saftly.. I have a feeling 4'6" will do it.

Only you can make that call - especially since it's a safety thing. For others to say it's X depth is not particularly appropriate. I think you need to take the family to a "Y" for a few hours during open swim and figure it out for yourself. Or to a hotel pool. Spend a little time/money and get your answer.

I am also very opposed to ledges in pools unless its a sun shelf type of thing (or SUPER steep slopes if that is your preferred term). I have multiple bad scenarios going through my head.

Also make sure you have an umbrella insurance policy.

Best of luck with this tough/important/safety decision.

cannonballs are ok in 5ft plus for average adults. you need 6ft if you wanna cover every situation. backflips are 6ft minimum because you are going in feet first. I would also worry about your floor Im guessing it will be vermiculite? its soft and if somebody lands on their feet it will make dents. dont know how ecofinish would hold up to that, and I still think you are barking up the wrong tree with the ecofinish in your situation

Thanks Jimmy.. Feeling pretty confident on this one regarding ecofinish.

I saw that link before you posted it I had to look around. If you are using that system with a 10" thick slab you will probably be ok. I wouldnt want to be a Guinea pig but my best wishes for the long haul life to your new pool. My new question is how come you disnt go with a concrete pool? Between the panels and floor and ecofinish you are in the same ballpark no? You guys do get freeze thaw cycles in st. Louis I beleive.

We have a 45' long vinyl lined pool so the shallow end is just that, shallow. Doesn't matter as the rafts float just as well in shallow as they do the deep end. Plus, it easier to plant toes on the ground to anchor in one place either in or out of the sun. Our deep end is at about 5'4". Plenty to jump in, we've had adults dive in and it's been perfect for us. Growing up we had a 4' deep above ground that we would dive into remembering you have to dive for distance not depth. We swam in some friends' pools before getting ours put in and neither of my kids liked the deep end of the pool. They are teenagers and very happy with the pool we have. Long term, this pool is for the two of us, not the kids. If the kids feel shorted because of the pool depth, they can get their own with a deep end that suits them better when they pay for it.

There is a $20,000 between Gunite plaster and Walled Eco. I have a lot of ground prep that rose the buget by an additional 20k so I could not manage it.

I feel your pain I would have paid much more than cost of pool install to fix my water and grade issues. Pool install was easy part yard is a nightmare. Surprised it's that much difference it's under 20k here from steel wall liner to gunite

The retaining wall and the back part of the fence are done! Pool company says it will start med to late next week. VERY excited. Leaning between 4'6" and 5' for the "jump area" of the pool
