I did a seasonal cleaning of my Pentair IC-40 swg last week. Before the cleaning I took my regular chem tests and had the following Results:
FC 7.5
PH 8.0
TA 120
CYA 30
I added 1 pint of muriatic acid and filled a sock with stabilizer for the skimmer and lowered SWG from 32% to 25%.
1 week later after cleaning SWG
FC 15
PH 7.6
TA 90
CYA 40
When cleaning the SWG it barely bubbled, it seemed very clean for 6 mos between cleanings, but even after lowering the SWG run cycle my FC went higher. I just lowered the SWG to 5%.
The question is; can cleaning the SWG make it that much more efficient?

FC demand is lower in the winter. You may need to lower the SWG further.

I would suspend cleaning the cell with Acid. Shortens the life of the cell. If you are using pool math, turn on track CSI and track temperature. Manage your CSI to be slightly negative and you will avoid scale.

Thank you for the SWG info. After reading I believe I have never needed to clean my SWG. There was never any visible buildup on the plates, I did it as seasonal maintenance as recommended by Pentair.
As far as my high FC levels; my SWG is usually set at 12-15% this time of year and I only use the spa occassionally, otherwise the HP is not used. Last month I had HP issues, and after repairing it I left it set at 86 for 2 weeks for testing. It would usually have been off for a month at this time of year with the SWG set around 12%. After testing FC at 7.5 I lowered the SWG to 25% not realizing I can make it much lower for the winter. Right now I have the SWG set at 5% and it is flashing low outpt mode. When the FC returns to normal I will adjust the SWG as necessary.
When spring rolls around I will start using PoolMath to track my meaurements for the year. If I had used it this year I probably wouldn't have had the need to start this thread.
Thanks again Merry Christmas!
