We have a Jandy sand filter SFTM24-2.0. Came home last night to low water level in the pool and the pump water level was low. We filled the pool and the water level held overnight. When I turned the equipment on this morning there is a high pressure leak (spraying out from one small area) at the connection of the multiport valve to the top of the sand filter under the backwash hose. It appears to be leaking at the connection rather than a hole in the filter body. Is it reasonable to hope I just need to replace the O ring? Is it safe to try this on my own?

If you can provide some pictures of the leak, that would help immensely in diagnosing. Yes one possibility is the o-ring that seals the mpv to the tank.

Is the clamp itself in good shape on visual inspection? The o-ring is a good probability. It could also be a crack in the valve body flange. It’s fairly simple to perform a visual inspection on the o-ring and the flange itself by removing the clamp after shutting down the system and releasing any pressure.

We depressurized and removed the clamp arm. It looks to be intact. The tank looks good and the multiport doesn't seem to have a leak. We did not take the valve off yet. We tried putting it back together and running on recirculate and it does not leak. We are going to run on recirculate to distribute some extra chlorine so we can leave the pump off for a bit while we think about whether we want to remove the multiport assembly ourselves to check the o ring.

The fact that you tightened it up and it doesn’t leak could be two things,
1. The clamp worked loose enough over time and that was the cause of the leak
2. The o-ring could be failing and you re-tensioning it temporarily resealing it
In a perfect world you should pull the mpv and inspect the o-ring for replacement. In reality you can keep an eye on it until it starts leaking again and then pull the mpv for a full inspection.

It did still leak in filter mode, but not in recirculate mode. I'm going to call around to see if I can find an o ring locally before I take it off, I think.

It’s leaking as it builds pressure in the filter. If you saw no cracks in the flange with the clamp removed the o-ring is the culprit.
