We have a Jandy LXi heater that is about 7 years old. Only used to heat spa during cool winter nights. Was working fine one weekend, now will not ignite.

Plenty of propane gas in tank. When the LXi unit tries to ignite, I hear the definitive three attempts spaced out about 5-7 minutes each. Also smell propane. Replaced the ignitor. Replaced the flame sense rod. Still no go. Fenwal continues to flash three times, indicating Ignition Fault (which is also indicated on LXi screen).

Do these Fenwal units often go bad?

Fenwal ignition modules do go bad but not that often. This should be the Fenwal ignition module for your heater Jandy JXi/LXi Ignition Control Kit | R0456900 . Note the information on the label. On a call for heat the combustion blower should run for 15 sec. for prepurge. Then the ignitor will be powered for a 40 sec. warmup after which the 24 volt gas valve will be powered for 7 sec. in a trial for ignition. If the burners do not light off, this sequence will be attempted 2 more times before the system goes into lockout (IF). The burners not lighting off with a properly operating ignitor can be due to dirty burners, dirty or partially plugged gas manifold orifices or inadequate gas manifold pressure and a couple other dirt/blockage related problems. A good place to start would be a thorough cleaning inspection by a qualified service company/technician if the heater has not been serviced/cleaned recently.
