I just opened my filter because water was leaking - probably have a dirty/bad o-ring. Decided to clean out the grids since I have it open. I had a lot of cellulose fiber sludge on the bottom and some stank and looked like algae/mold. Never seen this before. Anything special I need to do before I put it back together or anything I might have done wrong? Thx.

There is a solution you can purchase to clean filter grids. However, another option that was recommended on this forum to clean DE filters grids is a solution made from one cup of automatic dishwasher detergent for every five gallons of water. Use a large garbage can that will hold the grids. Open up and clean the filter normally, then soak the grids overnight in the detergent mixture, then rinse everything off and re-assemble.
