Sooo … the ships probably sailed on this point as it probably would overrun your budget, but I’m guessing they’re going to backfill the overdig using the excavated soil??
That’s usually a big no-no in construction best-practices because that disturbed clay soil will never compact back to its original form. So if they fill the area around the pool walls with it, it’s going to take a while for it to stop subsiding. I suggest you hold off on any hard scaping around the pool for a while or else you risk issues with a deck sinking relative to the pool and causing all sorts of cracking issues. Even if the deck contractor uses good fill base material prior to installing a deck, the underlying soil is not stable. Clay is generally very expansive with moisture content so you need to be careful with regards to what you’re building around the pool shell.
