Is there a better way to add bleach?

Hey Everyone!!

I have to bring my chlorine levels up quite a bit to get rid of some mustard algae and I was wondering if there is a way to add the bleach through some kind of dispenser?

We pour our bleach in soooooo slow (3-7 mins to empty a single jug) in front of the return jet in the deep end and it is still bleaching out the pool liner.

I am about to add several jugs and worried what it will do.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Heather

Are you sure it is bleaching your liner?

I think you can pour the bleach in quicker than that. I would say taking a minute or maybe 90 seconds per gallon jug would be fine. Use your brush to push the water around in the area you pour the bleach.

And are you pouring the bleach out in front of the return jet?

How old is the liner?
It is extremely rare that we hear of bleach causing what you are reporting. Low pH is generally much more determinental to the liner.

Got ya. I wasn’t sure if it was the Superpump variable speed pump or not.

Was said before I think you’re able to pour faster but follow up with a quick brush after you’re completed. As long as you’re pouring into the “flow” from the return all should be dispersed with no worries.

When I want to slow-dose a liquid, whether water to a plant, or chlorine to a pool, I grab a plastic container (like a milk jug) and poke a small hole in it with a nail. Then I insert a 1/4" drip line connector and a length of drip tubing. Now you can fill the container with liquid and place it at the edge of the pool with the end of the drip line in the return jet. It will dispense over the next 10 - 20 minutes.

I have a 17000+ gallon pool and I pour the bleach in directly over the return at a fairly fast rate (30-45 seconds per bottle). I do try to keep the pour right in the stream and I have never had a bit of problem. I do pour my acid additions a little slower just because I am generally downwind from the bottle and the fumes are rough. I cant imagine a gallon or 2 of 10% chlorine ever having enough strength against your 20000+ gallons of pool water to damage the liner... I used to have a 8600 gallon pool and administered bleach pretty much the same way and never hurt the liner.
Could it be something else??

Awesome!!! Thank you! Do you guys know if its OK to swim with mustard algae and at MA shock level?

You should only go to Mustard Algae shock level for 24 hours AFTER passing a normal SLAM Process.

You can safely swim in a pool as long as the FC is above the minimum and at or below SLAM level based on your CYA. You must also be able to see the bottom of the pool in the deep end of the pool.

I have bleached the liner when high concentrations of chlorine sat in one area and was not brushed.
Chlorine is heavier than water and if left to sit in one spot will bleach the liner.
Make sure you do a good brushing of the floor and maybe even the wall in the area that you pour the chlorine in. That will circulate it better.
Hope this helps

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! We have not needed to brush for dirt or grime as our pool is usually so clean but this makes so much sense.
