Is someone peeing in my pool?

Every morning I test my pool and I’m at a 4.5-5.0 ppm FC. My nephews’s aged 3 and 12 come over and with my kids aged 12 and 14. When I test after I’m at 2.5. I always test neathive for chloramines but in the evening the water burns my eyes. In the mornings it’s fine, but in the evenings it’s horrible. Anyone have any thoughts? My only thought is that maybe the 3 year old is peeing in the pool and soaking up my chlorine? Or maybe I need to raise my CYA higher. I’m at 60 now and the pool only gets full sun from 1000 to 400 with an auto cover.

The eye and nose burning in the evening is what is bothering me the most.

Of course the kids are peeing in the pool, but that's not likely source of your discomfort. Sunscreen and pH issues are more common sources if your CCs are in check. You could try leaving the pool open more to burn off any CCs that might be present; they're very vulnerable to UV.

FC/CYA Levels - raise your FC while you're at it. You're flirting with algae with FC so low.

That, and do you turn up the SWG when you are swimming? Under cover, I run 15% 24x7. When I open the cover, sun, and swimmers, I turn it up to 50%.

using 2ppm is typical for sun and swimmers for a couple hours. If you have your SWCG set to maintain 5, it isn't producing enough to handle that load.

You may have nailed it. I also notice a sheen of oil on the top of the water when my eyes bother me. The kids do have a tendency to lather up with sun screen and then jump right into the pool. I’m not going to win that battle with my wife or my sister in law though. I guess I’ll just turn up the swg.

I've turned to using one sunscreen on body, another type on face to avoid the burning eyes.
My kids drag in a ton of sunscreen to pool, but I'm just happy they don't fight it for their long-term health.

No I’ve just been running at 25%. That’s a good idea though. When no one is in I’ll dial it to 15% and then during peak hours I will set it at 50%.

Or just join #TeamRunHot - any FC level from the bottom of the ideal range, up to SLAM, is 100% ok. This is the beauty of the SWCG; it helps you make sure you don't have to do much to stay in the FC/CYA relationships' good graces.

Don't worry about micro-managing it, just let it ride. If it goes a bit higher, that's ok. One day with a lot of extra kids peeing in the pool, and you're no worse for the wear.

What works in my pool may not work in your pool! You need to know your demands and your outputs to figure out how to run it...I also keep my CYA at 90 and run 9-12 FC.
