TL;DR Pool came with house and now that I'm looking to replace the liner my measurements end up with non-standard size.
Story Time (possibly not relevant)
My family moved into our home, which already had an above ground pool, 7-8 years ago. We didn't have any experience owning or maintaining a pool and didn't know the right questions to ask. The previous owners told us the liner had been replaced within the last 10 years and they were leaving all of their tools, equipment, etc. That all seemed fine with me and over the years I've learned a lot about maintaining a pool and done all of that as well as minor repairs/replacements myself. Over the last couple years I've had to apply patches to the liner where leaks have occurred. I know we could be more proactive and be more gentle, but over those years it seems like the liner is just less resilient to punctures. Add to that the likely age and the faded and worn appearance I figured it was time to replace the liner.
I had always used a 28 ft diameter and 48 in depth when calculating volume for treating the pool or judging depth based on water line, but that was from rough measurements and assuming close was good enough. Now that I intend to replace the liner I wanted to get much more exact dimensions. Using a tape measure held to the inside wall close to the water line my father helped me try a few different spots generally east/west to measure diameter. We guessed where the direct opposite spot would be and moved back and forth until we found a local maximum distance and wrote that down. We did that 3 or 4 times and came with with an average of 29 ft. That was odd to me because I knew that 27 and 30 were common sizes, and even 28 was a standard. A week later we tried again this time choosing some spots generally north/south and doing the same process. Again we ended up with an average of 29 ft.
Measuring (probably relevant)
Since I couldn't find 29 ft as an option at any of the dozen online retailers selling liners I called one of them to ask about my issue. The person I talked to quickly said that he'd never heard of a 29 ft diameter pool and that it was probably 28 or 30 and simply out-of-round. I thanked him and went back to measuring. If it was out of round I would expect some spots to measure around 27 if it was an out-of-round 28 or some spots to measure around 31 if it was an out-of-round 30. So we measured again, this time paying attention to local minimums as well as maximums. Every spot ended up somewhere between 28'7" and 29'2".
I would prefer to do this myself, but I'm worried I have a special case here that will require an experienced pool service to handle. Additionally I'm worried that a special case will mean even a pool service company will have to charge more for what I need.
Question(s)
If my pool really is 29 ft in diameter what options do I have. Would I be able to order a 28 ft liner and tighten things up? Would a 30 ft fit fine but perhaps need something else done to prevent wrinkles?
Not a diameter question, but do I have the option to switch from a J hook to cheaper overlap style without needing a new frame?
