Intex sand filter dumped into pool on backwash

My sand filter was still pumping in the green on the gauge but I wanted to backwash it anyhow. I followed all the correct procedures and when I moved the pump to backwash it dumped dirty water in the pool and very little water came out the disharge port where it should. What caused this? I eventually went back and forth disharging and rinsing and it started working right...now I have to get the water clean. Just wondering what caused this because I have never had this problem in the past.

I'm not sure what caused this, but here are some guidelines to follow:

1) always shut off the pump before moving the valve

2) always turn the valve in the same direction, either clockwise or counterclockwise, just pick one. This reduces wear on the gasket.

3) always run on 'Rinse' after backwashing until the water runs clear before switching back to 'Filter'
