Anyone know if it's safe to plug these in with a timer! It's suggested to run these for six hours a day. I was thinking a timer would be helpful in keeping things consistent. The instructions say you can not use an extension cord so I was questioning whether it's safe to use a timer?

My intex pump (see sig) requires you push the gfci reset every time it loses power. However, it has a built in timer mode. Not sure if they all do, but my pump has a rocker switch. Middle is off, left is timer mode, right is constant on. For what it is worth, I've used mine for two years with an extension cord.

Currently running our Intex pump through an extension cord, however I always unplug the pump when people are in it. The cord is 12 gauge, outdoor rated. The built-in GFCI will trip as soon as it loses power. I tried a timer last year, and it simply wouldn't cooperate. I've heard of people cutting off the Intex GFCI and replacing it with a standard plug rated for the load of the pump. Just be sure the outlet is properly grounded and GFCI protected. I'm using the standard built in timer this year still.

As others mentioned, every Intex pump I've seen has built in timer function. Set the dial to number of hours for pump to run, then flip rocker switch to the timer position. The pump will come on for the number of hours set for, then turn off. It will repeat the cycle everyday.

That being said I have an Intermatic timer with power provided by a GFCI protected circuit breaker. I cut the GFCI off my Intex pump and wired into the Intermatic timer. I prefer the additional control flexibility including; multiple time cycle per day, and manual power override.

Mine did not come with a timer. When I plug it in it does come on immediately so I'm going to try ordering a timer. If it doesn't work out I'll return the timer and then just set up a reminder alarm on my phone to turn the filter on and off. Thanks for all the info!

I should have looked at your signature, I now see that model doesn't have a timer. If it became a pain you could remove the Intex GFCI and use an external timer provided the power for the pump is GFCI protected.
