Installing a check valve with compression coupling

Hi

Our pump has been losing prime for many months now and we have failed to identify the cause of it. We suspect it may be the return line that's leaking air. Our current setup has no valve at all and I've read that a check valve on the suction side can help the pump prime. I happen to have a check valve in hand but it's threaded rather than a true union. I was thinking if it'd be a good idea to use a compression coupling to help simplify future replacement. Basically the compression coupling will couple a pipe with a threaded coupler. Are compression couplings usually recommended for pool plumbing?

Thanks

If you are referring to the PVC compression fittings, I would say if you can fit those into your plumbing, they should be fine. I would not use them on the pressure side but I think they are ok on the suction side. Make sure to use silicone lube. Don't over-tighten or they may crack.

Oh. Is the pressure side different to the suction side beside direction of flow?

No, but if they blow off your plumbing you are going to lose a lot of water! It probably is not enough pressure to do this in your system but better safe than sorry.
