Hello

The great news is that I found my underground leak on my own. The not so great new is that I don't know how to install the replacement 45 degree coupling between the ends of these 2 pipes. The 2 pipes are not flexible so I don't see how I can fully insert and seat both ends into the 45. Here's a pic:
thank you

You can cut one pipe back and use a Kwik Repair Fitting that will slide onto the pipe.

Or you can get a handful of 90's and 45's and put together a U shape and trim the pipes back so it all fits.

Or...two stubs into the 45, and then two couplers, one on each of the stubs. Then each end of the new assembly on to the existing pipes that have been trimmed back to accommodate. If you have to, dig them out a bit more so you have enough flex to get the assembly on to them.

Unless you want to dig this all up again at some future point, don't use a Kwik Repair Fitting.
I've see a number of them leak within a few years of installation.

In order to use a 45, the inside corners of the pipes would need to be almost touching. While it isn't the best thing to use underground, you could cut those pipes back farther and use "flex" PVC pipe and two standard couplers. It is made in Schedule 40 and bendable. Have done it on a few occasions when tree roots moved the pipe and they no longer would line up after cutting the bad section out.
Can't tell if that is 1.5" or 2", but here is an example (they also have it in 2"):
