Installed a new variable speed pump. Is this much air normal?

I'd say you have a small hairline leak. If pump on prime doesnt clear it out theres air getting in somewhere. How long is your orine cycle. Can you time in on stopwatch and post for us
Come to think about it I had a pool this season with a similar problem. Low and behold it was a minute crack in the clear portion of the pump lid, to the side of it where it's covered by the lock down outer ring. Visually you could not see it if you tried but it showed up with the water hose method but not in the typical manner. After trying the water method on the lid and was almost giving up and starting to think out of the box I had turned off the pump to look at something when all of a sudden I see bubbling on the exterior top of the lid. The pump was pushing air out and through the crack it went where there was still water from the garden hose method. Well at that point it was clear to me. After a new lid was installed the problem was over.

Checked pump lid and both drain plugs? Those are easiest sources… surprised you didn’t find it there or at the unions.

Recirculate just by-passes the filter. This means that either the filter itself is the problem, or that the multiport is the issue.
I know as my filter gets dirtier, the bubbles under my pump lid increase. For me these small bubbles never show up in the pool, so I don't worry about them.
When is the last time your filter was opened, the grids removed and cleaned, including the air relief tube?

I would not worry about bubbles under the pump lid unless they cause other issues..
If the water in the pump basket keeps going down to where the pump is running out of water, that would be an issue.
If the air in the pump basket continually gets pushed into the filter and then out into the pool that would be an issue.
I have three IntelliFlo pumps, that all run at 1200 RPM most of the time. All three have some bubbles under the pump lid. I set up my automation system to ramp up the pump speed to 1800 RPM, a couple of times a day for an hour, or so, just purge most of the bubbles. I have been doing this on all three pools for a total of over 25 years and have not once had any issues with bubbles in the pools or the pumps running out of water.
For me anyway, I don't see a few bubbles under the pump lid as a problem.
