I had a different company do our pool opening this year and I found this part which was usually in our filter housing. Is it of vital importance or can it remain uninstalled until I do my next cartridge cleaning?
Perhaps the pic is misleading making it look like it's 4 ft long or something. But if it's only about 2.5 ft long, it looks to be a vert tube for the filter. The mesh filter on the top keeps sand out. You want that installed.

It's around 3 feet long or so iirc so it sounds like what you're talking about. Dang - I was hoping to not have to open the filter housing until I needed to do a cleaning.

Being a good Canadian boy I immediately translated it from the French, noting that the part was blue, not green. Maybe not a LOL moment but I did chuckle.
