So first winter with a new pool. I have a mesh safety cover that was recommended by my pool builder (they said beter to have water drian into pool vs build up. We have had a strange winter a lot of warm days followed by freezing the end result is a lot of rain and snow has now melted into the pool. Early in Dec I was able to drain out some excess water but last 2 month there was always some ice with a little water on top so I could not drain more. Now the ice has built up to top of tiles. Very worried of a huge repair bill come spring. Should I have gotten a solid cover? What else could I have done to prevent this? I even went after the pool guys left after closing and drained another 4-5 inches of water to be safe so was down probably 12+ in from tile line.

thanks,

Dave

If you've got a sump pump, drop that in when ever you can if there is no ice. Also you could lay it on the cover briefly (watch!) that could drop some water. Don't disturb ice manually as you risk pool damage.
Otherwise, if its ice-leave it alone and cross your fingers. Worse case is you may have to reattach any tiles that come loose.

Should I have left sump pump in bottom of pool to drain water below ice level?

Use Caution if Left In Pool Continuously

Leaving a submersible pump in the pool can create rust stains. Cheap submersible pumps are not designed for continuous submerged applications. They are designed as point of use water removal devices. The cheap ones often have externally exposed metal screens that are not high quality stainless steel. These pumps are not designed for moving water over long periods of time and pool water can easily become corrosive towards metals when chlorine and chloride are present.

70-80's this week plan to open the pool this weekend hoping for the best for no tile damage. I did peak in the deep end swim out and all looked good.

Opening the pool today. No tile damage whatsoever Very happy about that. But I had to drain out all that free water I got over the winter so I could access my Sun Deck and get to my bubble lights. Now refilling it with my fancy expensive city water.
