IC60 manual CYA levels contradict TFP recommendations

Hi, future new pool owner here. In process of pulling permits now. I'm in MA so excavation and concrete will be done this year, plaster and decking next year. So I figured I'll read and learn for now.
I was reading IC60 manual and it calls for 30-50 ppm for CYA while TFP chart recommends 60-90 levels. I'm confused

Use TFP recommended levels. Higher CYA protects your FC, so your daily FC demand is lower and your cell lasts longer. In MA you can get away with lower CYA levels. I'm at 90 to mitigate the blazing Texas sun. ☀️

Pav,

High CYA will not hurt the cell at all.. 30 to 50 is not a requirement, it is Pentair's recommendation..

When my CYA drops into the 40 to 50 range, my Chlorine demand almost doubles...

Higher CYA will actually make your cell last longer.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks, as I keep on reading l also found another discrepancy. The manual recommends 2-4 FC levels otherwise everything will corrode and blow up  while TFP suggests anywhere from 5 to 12 ppm. Quite a spread!
Here's the exact wording from the manual:

Desired Free Chlorine is 2.0-4.0 ppm, per APSP recommendations. Note: Above 4.0 ppm of chlorine may cause excessive corrosion of metal components and possibly cause damage to associated pool equipment.

Pav,

This assumes that your CYA is low.. Our higher CYA hold most of the FC in reserve.. Technically the FC number is higher, but the active chlorine is much lower.

I have three saltwater pools that all have IC40's.. So far I have been through 3 cell.. One lasted about 9 years, one over 8 years and the last one about 7 years. The 3 IntelliFlo pumps have been running 24/7 for well over 10 years.. No signs of corrosion or 'damage' to anything.

I have also never had algae, nor have I added any Pool Store shock to any of my pools. I also don't use phos-free, algicides, or any other magic pool store potions.

You will need to decide who's advice you plan to follow.. Whatever you decide is perfectly fine with me, but you can't mix and match our advice with other sources.

Thanks,

Jim R.

I'll take real life experience over what's written in the manual any day ,every day. That's what mainly brought me to this forum to begin with.
I apply this rule to many aspects if not all of my life;) so far it never failed me
