I made a HUGE mistake..

Started a couple of weeks ago opening my pool. I was a bad boy and I didn't put a cover on it over the winter so there were a ton of leaves and green sludge. I cleaned most organic material out and started a SLAM. Using the TF-100 kit, I purchased last year, I started testing using the quick chlorine and alkaline test. After a couple of hours I noticed that the chlorine had almost reduced to zero, I continued to add the liquid chlorine and check. Almost immediately the chlorine was gone. I had some more organic material on the bottom. All the while the pool pump was running 24/7. I continued to vacuum the organic material out of the pool until I was sure that it was completely gone. I continued the SLAM for two weeks with little change as the chlorine was still not coming up and the water was still cloudy and a blueish/green tint. My CYA was low, so I added some dry acid to get it to 40. My pH was super high (over 8) so I added enough muriatic acid to bring it down to 7.2.

Well, after purchasing MULTIPLE gallons of liquid 10% chlorine from Walmart, I thought I'm an idiot for trusting the quick test. I should know better. So I turned to the FAS-DPD R-08780 and R-0871. Almost immediately upon adding the crystals to the water, it turned a VERY dark pink. I thought, oh Crud, that's why my hand felt so dried out after l would dip my hands in the pool. So after 42 drops of 0871 solution, the water finally went clear. Yeah. 21ppm!! Today.. I checked and it was 18ppm. Have to wait on the sun to do it's job.

But my pool is still very cloudy and still has the blue/green tint. I have done several backwashes of my sand filter.

I learned my lesson to not trust the quick test because too much chlorine can make it look like there's too little and you adding and adding and your only worsening the problem.

So now.... It's a waiting game. Continuing to brush the sides of the vinyl liner as they did have a sandy feeling to them probably caused by the high alkalinity. I did not notice when I dropped the pH to 7.2, it was starting to loosen up a bit, now it's coming off easier. Hopefully, when I get it back to SLAM level, it will be clear. Once it clears, then I turn on my SWG.

Sorry for the rant. But I needed to vent to the group! :)

You must follow the SLAM Process step by step without taking short cuts.

You free lanced your own process. Both in the FC testing and in testing pH and lowering it.

You do NOT test pH during the SLAM. The process says to lower pH before beginning the SLAM. It says nothing about testing or adjusting pH during the SLAM.

During the SLAM, you test FC and CC and, maybe occasionally, CYA if it goes on for a long time.

For best results, follow the SLAM Process step by step as written with no short cuts or improvisations.

Your name here is fitting.

Also, if your CYA was at 30 there was no reason to raise it to 40 during the SLAM.

If you want future guidance on your water chemistry, log your testing in PoolMath so we can help keep you within the roadway.

Yep. Learned my lesson. I guess the combination of my ADHD and successful brain surgery last year turned my moniker into overdrive!

Were you performing or receiving?

Congratulations on the success either way.
I was on the receiving end. Luckily, it turned out being a non-malignant meningioma. My neurosurgeon had taken a picture of my brain during the surgery. I like to show it off to non-squeamish friends and family who question that I have one. From this pool stunt I pulled, I had to take a peek the picture again to assure myself. Dumb move on my part not following directions. I should know better!

I'm glad your surgery was a success and I hope you are ok.

Many of us have made various kinds of mistakes with our pools and thankfully many of them can be fixed without serious damage. Pool chemistry will definitely teach you the right way and wrong way of doing things quickly!
