I had to completely empty my pool...

We had liner issues and had to completely empty our pool to get it fixed. I'm now in process of refilling it. Where do I start once it's filled?? This will be my 3rd summer using the TFP method, but because our summers are so short around here (4 mths or so), when I open up the pool again, I feel like a newbie!

I know for sure I'll need to add salt. Should I add anything else before starting to test my water (I have your recommended test kit)? I've never had to start from scratch before! I still have probably 2 days before the pool is full and the equipment is actually turned on.

Did you completely drain it or partially drain it?

I know you said you did it completely, but that is odd with a liner pool. Normally you destroy the liner by doing that.

Hi J
Just test the water coming out of the tap just like you would your swimming pool water, and then use pool math to tell you how much of something you'll need to add.

Obviously, you'll need salt, and you'll need CYA, because those don't exist in tap water, but everything else just depends on the test results.

Since its new water, you'll need to let the salt circulate for 24 hrs before turning on the SWG. So plan on putting some bleach in the pool to keep some FC in it during that 24 hr circulation period.

The pool company completely drained it...twice!! Well, the first time there was about 2 ft of water left in the deep, then we refilled it. About 1 week later, they drained it again, this time completely, bone dry. We're now refilling it again. Dreading that water bill.....

Thanks, I’ll do that. CYA, is that baking soda?

Ahhh, OK, I have to buy that one from the pool store. I also had a chemical in my pool to help the water feel softer. Put it in once, get it up to the proper level and you usually don’t have to worry about it again (unless you drain your pool LOL). It’s not a necessary addition. Do you know what I’m talking about? I can’t for the life of me remember the name and I want to add it also.

Jen,
I think what your talking about is known as Borates, (disodium tetraborate), but it takes a good bit of it to get it up to about where you want it. Its commonly available in the supermarket in the form of 20 Mule Team Borax.

I would not recommend to add it right away. Get your pool up and going for 3 or 4 weeks and make sure that everything is going ok, then if you want to add it, that would be fine.

There isnt a test kit for Borates, so just use Pool Math to tell you how much to put in to get to a level of 50ppm. Or slightly less. Dont go over 50.

The pool store might have some sort of something like your talking about, but I wouldnt know what that is.

I did not catch that you had a saltwater pool.

A properly managed SW pool does not need borates in my view -- but if you want to add them, use Boric Acid. Poolmath will tell you how much you need to add 50ppm. DudaDiesel sells Boric Acid.
