I dropped a butter knife into the skimmer.

Pretty sure it is the "other" port in the skimmer that the vac hose was not in, so the equalizer or main drain. In which case it will not go to the pump. Probably a long way down at the 90 to the main drain. I think the magnet on a string is your best bet.

Most silverware is stainless steel and won’t stick to a magnet. Try on another piece before you put any effort into that route.

Depending on the shape of your pool, you probably have a couple of elbows between the skimmer and drain. Probably 45s. An endoscope for your phone can be a huge help. I have one that is IP67 waterproof with an 11.5 ft cable that I got for $35. It has saved me hours of work. You can mount a hook on it which MIGHT do the job.

Another idea that might work, get a 5 gallon shop vac and suck up from the skimmer line. Might get a lot of water and take a couple tries.

I had a small 8" garden snake go down my skimmer line while I was trying to get him out..Turned on the pump for a few seconds and found him in the pump basket..Shaken but moving :) Put him in the grass and an hour later her was gone

I am very happy to hear you went through the trouble of saving the snake. Too many people kill any snake they see. It's sad. Good for you Mark!
I as trying to put a stick in and get him to climb, worried that he might bite me :) Tried for 10 minutes then he slid down the whole.
I was glad he survived and was gone an hour later..He was thinking " that's was cool, can I do that again"
