I'm one of these newbies took over a pool, clueless.
I have a 43,000L SWCG pool (approx 10,000 galllons). It has a pump and a bag filter.
It went a mid-green colour 24 hours after the house was handed over. I started adding 25g pool shock tablets that he had already and he advised 8 then another 8 if no change. I did this and it remained the same, no worse. I asked him to give me 24 hours to increase chlorine more, as I thought it was too low. Owner decided to called pool company who came 2 days on the run and added more chlorine powder and Ph-. It started to clear but remained cloudy. My test strips arrived and showed FC 0, TC washed out, CYA 10, Alkalinity 0, pH 6.0, CaCO3 10, TDS 6500 on uncalibrated pen.
I added some pH+ (had already) to raise pH, went to 6.8 and started adding bicarb (owner never measured alkalinity), 1kg every 6 hours. I've also added 3 x 200g slow release chlorine tablets over the period of 2 weeks. I've had SWCG running days on end at FC is still very low. CYA had gone to 40, FC very low, TC still washed out on strips (shows very high in OTO), pH at 7.0, alkalinity 80. Still adding bicarb to get to 120.
Problem. I live in Thailand and they don't sell the DPD-FAS kits here. I'm trying to find alternatives.
I can find a DPD 1 test. But not 2, 3 or 4.
I can find a FC test that goes up to 8. The best TC test is an OTO with range 0-5.
Not ordered any of above yet
I've had to buy these tests separately, alkalinity, calcium and magnesium. They haven't arrived yet from suppliers.
I also have 6 in 1 strips, an electronic pH test pen and electronic TDS test pen. Both calibrated.
I have ordered liquid chlorine 10%, CYA, Calcium chloride, yet to arrive.
I have on hand h2o2 50%, pH+, sodium bisulphate, Borox, alum, shock tablets 25g, chlorine tablets 200g, salt, bicarb.
H2o2, alum and Borox could be used but I have no plans to, I just have them.
If I want to shock, I believe I need to know FC and TC. Quick question on dilution. Do you use the same amount of OTO drops recommended for normal test or do you multiply them by the dilution. So, say I do 1:3. How many drops if normal test is 5?
I'm trying to work out total chlorine but my current test only goes to 3. I live in the sticks and it's a 3 hour round trip to nearest pool shop, who only sells the basic Crud test I already have. I have to wait days or weeks for deliveries.
Any help or recommendations. I believe I have a lot of bound chlorine and want to free it.
I also want to check the SWCG, I believe the owner has never checked in 5 years. I can't get a FC reading any higher than very low using test strips, no matter how long I run it. He's basically done nothing but ph+/-, chlorine 200g and 8 x 25g shock if it looked green. He's never tested anything other than the red and yellow which has a range of 8.2 and 3.0 and an uncalibrated (won't calibrate) TDS pen for salt, so he adds when low on SWCG. His TDS pen is way out compared to my calibrated new one.
