I am hugging my SWG today

my CYA was low so I debated buying a few pucks and letting them dissolve in the floater. Raise CYA, maybe lower PH all while chlorinating some.

That was until I picked up a single tablet at Walmart last night and scanned the price!! $19 for a single tablet, they did have a 5pd bucket that was around $55 but that's insane!
If I didn't has a SWG I would be considering filling it full of dirt

The 4 pd bag of CYA that was $8 2 years ago is $20 now.

I paid $29 for an 8 lb bag of stabilizer yesterday at me local pool store. 2 years ago it was $19.

My SWCG probably has a complex because I’ve never shown it the love it deserves. I’ve never had a LC pool, as we had the pool built with a SWCG, so I take it for granted. But I do recognize and appreciate how easy life is because of the low maintenance contributions of my SWCG. My chiller, on the other hand, is the younger sibling, and gets more love because I still remember days of 95° pool water. Even in this never ending Texas summer of 100+ temps every day, my pool has yet to breach 85°.

Now excuse me while I go give the SWCG the hug it deserves…

Yep, WalMart captures those only wanting single tabs. Makes no sense. The 5lb bucket would be about $5 each. At the single pack rate, that 5lb bucket would cost $190!! Makes no sense, seen it, but somebody is buying apparently.

Do the tablets degrade like liquid chlorine ? Previous owner left half of a 50lb bucket of what appears to be 3" Trichlor pucks in the shed - I haven't touched them since we moved in...

Do the tablets degrade like liquid chlorine ?

The chlorine and CYA in tablets get consumed and degraded the same way as separate liquid chlorine and stabilizer do.

So basically I probably have a bucket of white, flaky, hockey pucks ?
How does one safely dispose of said forbidden-breath-mints ?
Hazmat days maybe ?

Before long there will be people like @JoyfulNoise buying old Crack houses and making Chlorine tablets :)

And going by this thread...
I think there's something wrong with this year's crop of CYA.

I usually have no trouble maintaining 40 ppm CYA. Until this year. Pool Math shows 30 ppm in late March, which is when I started adding CYA to get back to 40.

Since then, I have added 8 lbs. of granular CYA (from Leslie's) and 5 lbs. of trichlor tablets. Pool Math says this should have raised my CYA by 36 ppm, but my CYA stubbornly remains in the 30s range, generally around 35 if you'll permit the interpolation, and only rarely and briefly hitting 40.

My R-13 reagent is fresh and I'm well practiced at the CYA test. My pool is covered whenever not in use. So either this year's CYA is duff or something else is strangely wrong. I'm open to ideas.
... there are already questionable white substances coming out of these houses.

Just reserve them for vacations & such - they will last forever if kept dry. Or sell em on the fb marketplace- You’re sitting on a gold mine lol 🤑 😂
i have a big bucket my friend gave me so I have pretty much a lifetime supply. I use maybe 1 a week during the 100 degree weather to keep my cya up & help supplement my wimpy swg along w/ liquid chlorine.
