How to measure sand filter?

I have been looking at used sand filters on Craig's list and had a person send me a pic of the label to try and determine what size it is. People here on the forum recommended I go with atleast a 19" sand filter. The label gives measurements it says 19" height and 16" diameter. Just wondering which measurement I should be going off of?

Diameter.

Be cautious of Craig's list equipment. If you have to replace the internals, gasket, and multiport you may as well buy a new unit. Remember, this is a pressure vessel. You do not want one that is compromised.

Take care.

The diameter is normally the controlling measurement for sand filters. The 16" might be big enough, but you have that 1 hp pump so it'd likely be too much flow for that filter.

If we were close enough together, I'd give you my old 24" filter and 1 hp pump. I'm afraid that shipping them from Alabama to Idaho would be about the cost of a new one.

Anyway, look for a filter about 19" to 22" diameter or even larger will work.

Personally, I'd pass on the used Craigslist filter. Firstly, it appears too small; Secondly, there's a very good chance there's a reason they are selling it (spider gasket leaking, etc); Thirdly, you can get a new filter and multi valve for under $300 on Amazon or at any of the mail order pool supply houses.

Not worth the risk of plumbing it all in, only to find there's a problem.

I would suggest that you size the filter based on the pump.

I suggest finding the flow rate of the pump at 20 ft of head, then using the following equation.

√(F x 3.05) = radius of filter in inches.

For example if the flow is 60 gpm at 20 feet of head.

√(60 x 3.05) = 13.5 inches radius or about 27 inches diameter.

That gives you 4 square ft of sand surface area and about 15 gpm per square foot.

Hey! Also in Alabama. You still have that filter? We rent and ours cracked last summer. Landlord is threatening to demolish our pool because he doesn't want to replace the pump. Would love to purchase a used one if possible!!

Really that's a bad sign and you should not be paying for a pump for the land Lords pool, they will demolish the pool eventually then because there is always something that will cost money, and it is also going to cost more to demolish the pool then buy a pump.

If you're talking to me, Yes I still have the filter and pump. If you have somebody coming this way I'll be happy to check it out and see if it will still run.
I'm just north of Mobile.
