I've had my pool for 2 months and haven't cleaned the pump basket yet. I use the hairnets so most of the debris gets in there but sometimes when I take the hair net off things get sucked into the pump. Can the debris go into motor or impeller? It's basically a few bugs and some small leaves. Should I be cleaning the pump basket on a regular basis? Maybe there is a total of 7 pieces of debris in the pump basket.

Only put the hairnets inside your skimmer basket. That way you are decreasing the debris that even gets to your pump basket and it won't require cleaning out that often. Turn the pump off when changing the hairnet to avoid having anything sucked in to the impeller, and yes, it can happen! Just clean the pump basket out once in awhile if needed. If nothing in there, don't open it up.
