How Much Salt to Add

Hi All - my pool is about 7 weeks old and we will be turning on our IC40 on July 1st. I have all of the test kits and will test the water for salt but I’m struggling to understand how much salt to add. Our pool is about 20K gallons and we’ve been using liquid chlorine for the last week (after switching from pucks). Any recommendations on initial salt is appreciated.

Use it to determine how much to go form current (based on your testing) to 3200 ppm. Then add 2/3 rds of that, let it mix in, brush, run pump, etc for 24 hours, test again, then add the balance to get to 3200 ppm.

Thank you! To confirm, I shouldn’t put the IC40 on until after the pool gets to 3200 ppm?

Correct. It is best to not have the SWCG on when adding salt and getting mixed.

For reference, my 20k gallon pool took about 14 bags (40# each) to reach 3400ppm when new. Walmart has the cheapest price for "Pool" specific salt at about $5.50 per bag.

Very important to test with K-1766 to find out exactly how much salt is currently in pool. Given that your pool is new, it should be very little. But this can be a huge surprise when suddenly you have too much salt in the pool!
