hi first time poster. doing my first slam. i'm supposed to add 5 x 128jugs of chlorine - so i'm buying 10 jugs per the instructions. my cya is 50 and my chlorine is almost zero. the pool water is green.
my question: how many jugs of chlorine should i add to START the SLAM - ie how much should i add before I do my first FC test (target fc 20 according to pool math). thanks so much!!

How big’s your pool?

You probably go through those 10 jugs on the first day!!
After adding the first 5, test about 30 min later to see what your number is.
Test several times (about every 3-4 hours) during the day and top off to slam level.
My pool is about 12000 gal, it took about 40 gal to finish my slam.
It takes less and less chlorine to stay in slam mode if you keep on top of it. Don't give the algae a chance of growing back if you skip the topping off. It would mean to start from scratch again.
I started my slam on a Friday afternoon, and kept going over the weekend, into the late Monday hours. But after that time I only tested twice a day & topped off until I passed the OverNightTest.
Good luck!!

thank you so much! i added 8 gallons today but i couldn't get FC anywhere close to 20 (which is what poolmath says i need) so back to the pool supply store tomorrow! really appreciate your help..

The general recommendation is to buy enough to get from 0FC to SLAM level FC. That would be about 6 gallons for you.

The fact that you could not get to 20FC with 8 gallons (which would be 50ppm) is concerning.

  1. Can you post a picture of your pool water? (Like to see *how* green your pool is...)
  2. What test kit are you using to test your water? (You need one of these kits to SLAM...link-->Test Kits Compared)
  3. Are you using pool math to calculate how much chlorine to add to get to SLAM level FC? If not get it...Link-->PoolMath
  4. How did you determine the volume of your pool? Can you give us shape and dimensions of the pool (L an W and shallow and deep depths)? (It may be that your pool volume is off)
  5. Add 10ppm (1 gallon), test 30 minutes later.
  6. If your FC is still below 3FC, make another addition of 1 gallon.
  7. Repeat until your FC is at least 3 after 30 minutes.
  8. Then using pool math, determine how much to add to get to SLAM FC (20) and add it. Test 30 minutes later.
  9. When your FC is close to SLAM level (17-20) after 30 minutes, continue slam and replace FC every 2-3 hours.
  10. After a few days, and FC drop has slowed, then you can go to less frequent additions. (no fewer that 3-4 per day).
