I wanted to hard pipe filter and pump about 25 ft from the pool to the side of my house, but the owners manual says to install it 2 to 5 ft from pool. It's waterway outdoor pro cartridge filter with 2 speed 2 HP motor. Why wouldn't I be able to install further? What kind of filter would I need for that?

it is just a statement.. most do that anyway with above ground pools.. A 2hp pump you can put it where you want it.. What size pipe are you using? I used 2 inch and I am about 20 feet away on suctions and 30 feet for returns..

The waterway kit comes with some cheap hoses. The max distance they give is likely based on how far those hoses can reach. If you use your own plumbing, you should be able to go much further.

The length of the pipes run will increase friction loss, which will decrease GPM. Friction loss is much greater in small diameter pipe, and increases with each fitting used. See chart on this web page ---> PVC Pipes - Friction Loss and Flow Velocities Schedule 40
If you use 2" PVC and can do a straight run, the friction loss is very low.
example:
1.25" pipe at 50 GPM for 100 foot run has a friction loss of 13.2 psi and added head pressure of 30 feet and extremely high water velocity.
2" pipe at 50 GPM for 100 foot run has a friction loss of 1.8 psi and added head pressure of 4 feet and a safe water velocity.

My pool is 15x26. My run will be the same as yours. Where do I need valves and unions? At the skimmer and return port?it is just a statement.. most do that anyway with above ground pools.. here is where I did mine.. Use Jandy Neverlube valves as they work for years, 9 so far with mine and no issues

I know this thread is a few months old but I have the same pump as OP. I want to move the pump a whopping 60 away so it’s near the garage. Can I do this? What size pipe would I need? I’m currently using 1.5 inch pipe and fittings. I’m not sure if I can put 2 inch pipe on it without increasing and reducing Does that matter?
