Hi,
Ok, so it’s getting hot here in SA TX. For those of you that live in a similar climate, about of much bleach are you burning through a day on average? Right now I’m going through about a gallon a day. My CYA is at 40 right now, but I plan to raise that to 50 this weekend. Unless 1 gallon per day is about right. Thanks!

Typical pools use 2-4 ppm of chlorine each day. Can increase with bather load or lots of organics getting in the pool.

Use PoolMath to see how much FC the one gallon of liquid chlorine adds to your pool.

Take care.

Since May 1 my *average* FC loss has been 2. CYA 40, full sun, 26k gallons in Dallas. That's 77 oz of 8.25% per day to target FC 6.

Looks like one gallon is about 3.5 FC for your pool. That's not bad, but as our temps climb it will cross that 4ppm threshold. My CYA is about 50 right now and soon I'll be looking to crank it up to at least 60 as my pool is full sun all day. I'm happy when my FC consumption is about 2.5 each day with no swimming.

Im going through a gallon a day. CYA is 40. I shoot for 5-6 FC. When I get home in the evening and test, Im down usually to about 1-2 FC. We also have full E-W sun.

I recommend you follow the [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA]. Your statement says you drop below minimum each day. That is not a good idea.

Take care.

Now in your case Berger82, I think you're going trough too much if you're using regular 8.25% strength or higher. One gallon of 8.25% strength bleach should increase the FC in your 18.5K pool by 5ppm. We don't like to see a loss of more than 4 in 24 hrs unless there was a heavy load like a swimming party or something. Plus your FC has dropped below the minimum which is always a concern for letting algae enter. So in your case, you might consider doing an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test to make sure there's nothing lurking in the water. If you pass the OCLT, bump-up your CYA to 50 and see if that helps you preserve FC better throughout the day. Ideally you would like to have your FC in that 5-7 range for your current CYA, and find it at about 3-4 the following day. Never below 3 though.
