So, as you guys know I live Costa Rica with no way to get Taylor reactives. What I normally do is that I bring a few large bottles with me whenever I go to the US or I buy them online and get then sent to me here. Last time I had issues with customs as they thought some of the reactives might be dangerous which I solved by providing my parcel company with the appropriate safety sheets. However I have hit a snag with R-0009 which of course is Sulphuric Acid. I have received a resounding no from my parcel company to have it shipped and I'm afraid to just even get a bottle in my bag next time I travel as I might be flag as who knows what lol.

So I have found these two sulphuric acid solutions here and was wondering if it would be possible to produce my own home made R-0009 solution.

To my very uninformed mind it seems there's gotta be a way to do it but I have no understanding of normalities, moles and the like. Can you maybe shed some light on this.

On vacation so I can’t do the calculations now. Perhaps @JamesW can help.

But R-0009 is 0.12N (0.12 normal) sulfuric acid. So the 0.01N stuff won’t work. You need to carefully dilute the 16% product.

Even after you make your own, you should really standardize what you make against a know base. There are standardization processes for almost all acids.

16% w/v sulfuric acid is 3.26 Normal and it contains 160 grams per liter (pH = -0.21).

0.12 Normal (0.06M) sulfuric acid contains 5.88 grams per liter (pH = 1.22).

The mass is 27.21 times.

So, you would dilute by 27.21.

If you have 1 liter of 16% sulfuric acid, you would need 26.21 liters of distilled water to create 27.21 liters of 0.12N solution.

Or, 10 milliliter 16% sulfuric acid added to 262.1 milliliter distilled water to create 272.1 milliliter of 0.12N solution.

Note: You need to verify that the percentage is w/v.

If the percentage is v/v or w/w, the calculations are different.

Ask the manufacturer how the percentage is calculated and what are the normality and molarity.

Also, ask them the correct dilution to make a 0.12N solution.

To create a 0.12N (0.06M) solution of sulfuric acid, take 3.33 ml concentrated H₂SO₄ (18M) and dilute to 1 liter.

To create a 16% w/v (3.26N or 1.63M) solution of sulfuric acid, take 90.64 ml concentrated H₂SO₄ (18M) and dilute to 1 liter. Divide by 27.2 to get to 0.12N.

To create a 16% w/w (3.6N or 1.8M) solution of sulfuric acid, take 90.64 ml concentrated H₂SO₄ (18M) and add 840 grams of water. Divide by 30 to get to 0.12N.

To create a 16% v/v (6.26N or 3.13M) solution of sulfuric acid, take 170 ml concentrated H₂SO₄ (18M) and dilute to 1 liter. Divide by 52.2 to get to 0.12N.

18M sulfuric acid is 18 moles per liter and 36N.

18 M sulfuric acid at 94% v/v, 180% w/v, 96% w/w.

The density is 1,831 grams per liter.

There is 1.77 kg sulfuric acid per liter of solution.

pH = -1.26.

Can you source Blue Devil reagents? Their TA titrating reagent (reagent #3) is hydrochloric acid instead of sulphuric acid. Maybe your parcel company would be happier with that? I sometimes use that as a substitute together with the Taylor TA indicator which I find easier to "read" than the Blue Devil indicator. The Blue Devil concentration / drop size is designed for a 15ml water sample to get 10ppm/drop resolution.

This is especially true for sulfuric acid. It has an incredibly large, exothermic heat of hydration and can literally cause water to boil on dilution. Dilutions should always be done in laboratory glassware and not anything made of plastic. The resulting solution will remain warm for over an hour or more. Allow it to fully cool before using.

Search for 0.12N sulfuric acid.

You can make your own as long as you know the normality and you can dilute from there.

Reply:

16% v/v sulfuric acid = 2.99M = 5.97N

So, divide by 49.75.

1 part 16% acid to 48.75 parts distilled water.

10 ml 16% acid to 487.5 ml distilled water = 497.5 ml 0.12N solution.

Thanks for the bump Marty! Tremendously useful responses you guys. I think I might have a good idea on how to get to what I need. I'll proceed with all precautions and hopefully I will still have 10 fingers at the end.

Col 18.000 are about 25 bucks but that company is not really delivering in Costa Rica. I think is a bit of an scam or at least non-functioning.
