Does anyone know why there would be a hole drilled in the back of a skimmer? It appears to drain directly into the soil. See attached picture.

Welcome to TFP!!!Looks like a poor mans overflow drain.
Any overflow should be plumbed to pipe that allows it to drain to a location that will not cause problems. Just draining into the soil right by the skimmer seems like a bad idea to me.
Personally my pool's have not had overflows ... so you could just plug up the hole. Although FL gets a bit more rain than AZ
What's that foreign object in the basket? I've never seen one of those! [emoji13] [emoji474]
Fortunately I can see sand (aka FL soil) through the hole, so a giant sinkhole hasn't developed. This pool is ~30 years old. Thanks for your help.
I was joking that it looked like a chlorine puck. But a rock works too! Lol
