I've had a SWG for 20 years and had it replaced last year with a new wall unit - same as before - Hayward Aquarite 900. I had my pool replastered over the winter and new water added and was told not to add salt until spring (just use liquid chlorine until it's warmer.) Now I've added salt and the wall display says the level is 4200, but the display doesn't say it's high. Here are the diagnostics off the panel: 4200, 60 (temp?), 26.2, 6.25, 42p, -4100, AC -0, r 1.59, t -15. It's set to Auto. I tested the salt with my manual Taylor salt tester and it says the level of salt is 3400. I would like to add some conditioner to the pool and some calcium hardness increaser but I don't want to do those before I'm sure the salt level isn't too high because I don't want to have to drain water from the pool and have to re-do those things. My questions are: Why does my panel and my taylor test read so different? At what level will the panel light up "high salt"? (I thought in years past 4200 would be too high!) As of now, the lights are green for Power and for Generating so I assume it's generating chlorine! I'm not sure what water temperature causes the salt to be generated - is 60 high enough? I'm sure i can look some of those things up....

HIGH SALT is triggered by high amps, which is over 8 amps, and not really by salinity.
Amps rise as water temperature rises. You will probably get HIGH SALT once your pool warms up.

Since the panel says 4200 and the Taylor salt kit says the level of salt is 3400, I should trust the Taylor kit, right? According to Hayward, 3400 is the highest that should be ok for the salt cell to work - am I correct?

The Hayward system only knows about the number it calculates. The manual is referring to the number the system sees.
I would wait and let your pool warm up and see how the system readings change. If your amps get into the 7’s then I would drain your pool a bit and lower your salt level.
