High Phosphates

After having extremely high CYA, we drained 2/3 of our pool and refilled with fresh water. Now working to get all chemicals balanced again. Took my sample to Leslie's after refilling. We use a Taylor test kit. But we do not have a test for high phosphates. Leslie's test showed 2,966 ppl...ideal range shows 0-100ppb. So...recommended to start with a clean filter, use 2 gallons, 12 oz. of Leslie's NoPhos, adding no more than 48 oz. at a time. Run the pump for 48 hours without backwashing or cleaning.Monitor filter pressure as it can rise rapidly with the use of NoPhos. After 48 hours of filtering clean or backwash the filter before adding any more NoPhos, which will need to be done in order to equal 2 gallons 12 ounces.
Hoping for advice from anyone who has dealt with this. It seems like a risky process. We have never tested for phosphates before and are wondering if the levels are dangerous or hurtful to our equipment. Just questioning the process. Any help is most appreciated.

Welcome to TFP.

If you maintain proper FC and CYA levels then phosphates rarely matter.

Leslie water testing scares people to treat their pools unnecessarily. Best thing you can do is stay out of the store.

Let’s start with making things VERY simple for you……….ignore phosphates and RUN fast away from the expensive NoPhos rubbish. Let me ask these two questions first,

1. What does your water look like?
2. What are your test results from your Taylor Kit??
