TA now 60; FC 24; CC 0. Didn't check PH considering such high FC.

Very happy with change in TA. We did add an inch of softened water plus it greatly rained yesterday. Don't know if that helped.

Best I could get FC to was 24. That was with a gallon more of bleach than Pool Math suggested. Going to leave it alone now.
 
Test and dose every couple hours during the start of a SLAM. Any time you are under your shock level FC algae is growing. So hit it hard, do not leave it alone.

Also --Brush! Algae is attacked quicker when it is disturbed.

We're getting there. Did the overnight FC test and only went down 1. However, I did the TA test wrong I think when I posted it before - it's still high so we're trying to do that next but my FC is pretty high - it's 23.

I studied up on this forum on how to test PH with a high FC and tried the 1/2 and 1/2 water and it showed a PH of about 7.2. But who knows if that is correct.

In the meantime, it's aerating at both ends so it should go back up and hopefully my TA will start going down.

We need to get this done or we'll have no time left to swim :).

My guess is we only have about 3 weeks at most to swim now and I'm hoping the FC will start going down so that it's safe to swim soon.

Would rain cause TA to go up? It rained a lot this am before I tested.

Going to brush again and vacuum.
 
Do not worry about the TA -- as you add acid to lower your pH the TA will lower. It has not effect on other conditions in your pool.

You can swim when your FC is at or below shock level; you can see the bottom of the pool; and your pH is between 7.2 and 7.8 (before the SLAM started).

Rain raises pH due to aeration.
 
The only reason to even consider lowering TA is it helps keep th PH more stable. With the limited time you have left in your season, just disregard it. You focus should be FC and pH.

Ok - FC at 20.5. I was able to get a PH reading even though that high - looked credible. It was 7.6. We ran filter all night as we'd added .5 gallon muriatic acid kind of blindly yesterday as we were getting a false high PH (I assumed...if not false it was about 8.2)

We greatly brushed and vacuumed last evening. Took FC right before and it was 22. So we went down about 1 - 1.5 overnight. Second good night.

We both agree this is the best the water has looked all summer - never looked cloudy before - it always shined but now it has an even better clarity.

Since we constantly aerate - shouldn't we try to get TA down to at least 100? It is 110 as of this am. This is an improvement.

I was thinking I'd like to do that one more time today - adding another .5 gallon of acid - the pool is too cold to swim today anyway - we'll heat it overnight so we can swim tomorrow - we're missing it :).
 
I want to thank you all again. Water is the best since we lived here. We went swimming and it was like being in a bath of soft water. Algae is gone but left some grey stain. :-(

No more popping from the heater or rocks coming from one of the flows.

Looks beautiful. FC is 8.5 now and PH is 7.8. (TA 95 and no CC) That's pretty good since we've run the heater for about 48 hours straight. (It's 89 this am :)). Going to top off chlorine and acid today - want to stay ahead of the game here. Going to try to bring FC over 10 and and PH down to 7.4 again.

As you indicated, there was no chlorine smell. We even scrubbed down the border and top rail (with special pool soap) and no negative impact.

FYI I already had to buy more R-0871. :) Got 2 ounces but see I could get 16 - next spring will do that.

Too bad we only have so many weeks to go. But then there is next year. We don't cover over the winter because we want the snow and rain but we're going to get a leaf cover for the fall. The leaves have always been our major issue. Other than that the pool isn't that bad come spring. It's pretty isolated.

PH was on the rise again so we added a .5 gallon of acid yesterday - tested later and it was down to 7.2. Checked this am. FC 8.0, PH 7.4 and voila TA down to 75 - it had been gradually going down after I had added acid. We're in business!!!! Now if it would only stay warm for a while here. And I'm enjoying the waterfall sounds. :)
