I just made a small solid concrete technically above ground pool next to my causal dining tv room. have been using above ground pools for years but tired of them rusting out or sun baking. We use it about 6 months and some use it 12 months. I designed it such that later I can insulate and heat it in the winter. winter temp is about 70-75 degrees outside day time.

Pictured here is me delivering a custom pineapple and pepperoni pizza to my unofficially adopted son who helped me apply the epoxies to the solid concrete pool. Ya this is the second day of adding water and first time we ate in the pool, and last. Man was that epoxy hard to apply fast enough in this heat.

Some ask why a pool when beachfront, well man-o-wars, and jellyfish once the sea water is hot.

I found this site in a search as my chlorine tabs seem not to be working, I believe they are now at 3 years old since I did not have a pool last year. So the search led me here as no general search was close to answering my question about shelf life at higher temps. I have 3 year old chlorine tabs that I use in my stored water and our summer temps are 84 at night and 93 day, all sites say tabs should be stored below 80 degrees or so. No site I could find tells me how long my tabs last at a higher temp like this for 5 months.WhatsApp Image 2022-08-14 at 7.30.52 PM.jpeg

Welcome to TFP! I doubt there's a problem with the tabs themselves, but more likely your CYA level has exceeded it's manageable level due to those very tabs since they constantly add stabilizer. Take a look at our FC/CYA Levels to see what I mean. If your CYA is on the high end of 80 or more, your FC is probably much too low for effective sanitation.

How do you know for sure? Proper home testing with a TF-100 or Taylor K-2006C. In general, we don't recommend tabs for long term use. Liquid chlorine to converting to a salt water generator is best.

thanks so much Tx spash,

great links, appreciate them....

I had never had a problem in 12 or so years before with the cheapy plastic above ground pools, so hoping this is the issue unless the specialized pool epoxy has a chemical reaction.

I am right there with you, I have purchased a salt water generator and have it in a box, not installed. But for me I am taking it incrementally to just see first if all the same as the old days. Which it appears to be not.

Plus more research for me, it has been rumored around town here that i was not paying detailed attention to many years ago but did take a mental note. We have a high NaCl from sea water intrusion to our local well water and or other minerals level in our water here that causes issues with the salt generators. So with that tidbit in the back of my mind is why I an first seeing that i can get the pool up and running like i use too with the cheapy above ground pools. Our tap water is about 3000 ppm dissolved solids with the NaCl a strong taste and boy does our water scale everything up and dissolves/corrodes copper pipes valves. We can order truck loads of water from a spring at about 60ppm at USD$70.00 but that is way too much water for me and wanted to see the evaporation rate of the new pool to see what my storage I will need of the good water to not add the high content of tap water high ppm water.

I figure it is going to take me about 1 year to get all this settled down to a science and art, ie to get it right.

well i went to Home Depot yesterday and bought new tablets. And some quick chlorine. did the quick and sure enough all was good. Added the new tab and all is still good. If i make it another day I guess ase closed clorint tabs do not like storage at 90ish degrees in the summer for 3 years.
