Hi! I am long overdue for joining this community which I already believe will be very useful for us in the future. We've owned our house and pool for seven years, so we're not full-on newbies. When we moved into our house, our plaster pool was in desperate need of resurfacing. So we ditched the plaster and put in PebbleSheen. We LOVE our pool. We are located in Livermore, CA, which is about 50 miles east of San Francisco. It gets very hot here in the summer--we got up to 119F last September and we were everybody's favorite people when the power went out and the AC stopped working, hahaha.
Okay, INTRO aside, I'm hoping to get some insight, pointers, etc from any pool professionals or pool owners who have had to drain their pool. I've read mixed opinions about whether a pool should ever be drained. Our pool water hasn't been replaced since we resurfaced it seven years ago. This past year was exceptionally challenging to keep the pool free of algae. We blew through so many chemicals that seemed to do nothing. Our CYA levels are through the roof. So we've come to the conclusion that we need to drain our pool, give it a scrub, and replace the water. And not only can we not find any companies out here who would provide this service, or who are able to within the next few months, but my husband tries to save money anywhere he can and wants to do it himself. Find any clear literature or how-to videos that address our concerns is hard to come by, so I'm hoping some folks here can provide us with some insights, tips, etc.
1) Any tips, tricks, warnings we should be aware of?
2) BIG QUESTION. How long after rain should we wait to drain to prevent floating/popping? We've had an incredibly wet winter here in California. Our last HUGE rainfall was back in March, but this past week we've had several days with light on/off rain. I cannot find any guidance on how long is a safe time to wait.
Thank you for reading and happy to be here!
