Help with tight PVC fitting on DE Filter

Hi all.

I'm trying to open my Hayward EC50 DE filter for cleaning. Removed the bolts at the top, but not able to lift it out because I'm unable to decouple the PVC fittings for the pump or the return lines from the filter!

Here is one pic (sorry I may have made it too small in trying to abide by the size restrictions)...IMG_20170611_153410.jpg

Any ideas to decouple tight PVC fittings?

Thanks.

sp,

I don't have that specific filter, but it does not appear it is designed to be opened and cleaned like a normal DE filter.

The PVC in your picture is the type that gets glued together and it appears to me it would be impossible to take the top off without cutting the PVC pipe.

The manual specifically says to use unions to make maintenance possible.

Here is a link to the manual if you don't have one... https://www.hayward-pool.com/pdf/manuals/Perflex-EC50.pdf

Maybe someone with this filter will chime in...

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks. It turned out that once I took out the bolt in the bump handle, I was able to maneuver the "lid" (still connected to the PVC pipes) off to one side, and then pull the finger-assembly of the filter out for cleaning. It was a nasty business putting it back in though. The perturbation has now caused a very small drip/leak in the "glued" section. So I have to - in the near future - fix the fitting to have a union.

As someone who is completely new not only to pools but also PVC plumbing/cutting/union-ing, any advice or guidelines on how to proceed?

sp,

You need to buy a pump union.. Here is an example.... https://www.googleadservices.com/pagead/aclk?sa=L&ai=DChcSEwjR7YuLuLvUAhWBZn4KHdahDXIYABAPGgJwYw&ohost=www.google.com&cid=CAASEuRouhaHPRcvqlWtl0VgXZEfyQ&sig=AOD64_0pzKxBoIyDfoKR4jKFpJsbHrAuAw&ctype=5&rct=j&q=&ved=0ahUKEwjRsIiLuLvUAhUFzGMKHSxzDyUQvhcIMA&adurl=

The union would screw into your filter lid. You would then need to cut off the old 90 degree elbow and install a new elbow. Very easy to do, but much harder to explain.. :p Suggest you watch a couple of U-tube videos on working with PVC or find a friend with a little plumbing background.

It would also be very important to buy the right size union. You either have 1.5" or 2" pipe.. I suspect it is 1.5" but it should be printed on the side of the pipe. You would buy the same size union.

The union comes apart of course, making the lid removal a piece of cake..

Thanks,

Jim R.
