Help with bromine pool - how to slam

Hi there,
I am trying to help a friend with clearing up their pool which currently has algae in it. The pool is a 37 year old vinyl in-ground pool, approx 18' x 36' with an 8' deep end. The pool has been meticulously cared for over its lifetime - they went over 30 years before they had to replace the liner! Unfortunately the husband is in hospital. The pool has algae in it and the wife does not know how to fix this. I have a salt water pool and have never dealt with bromine. I can't find any info on this site about correct chemical levels for a bromine pool or how to slam a bromine pool.

I have a new Taylor K-2006 test kit. It has instructions for testing bromine levels but I don't understand them. After adding the required drops is says "match colour". For the life of me, I can't figure out what that means or what the instructions that follow it means.

Any advice? I would really like to help her out as she has enough on her mind with a sick husband than to worry about her pool.

30 years for a liner must be a record! That tells me they had good pH control.

It is very difficult to measure Bromine, and we don't recommend its use in pools. I've never read here of anyone needing to SLAM since no one here uses it. This is strictly a chlorine forum, sorry!

Any chance the owner wants to drain and go with chlorine instead? You can't just add chlorine to a bromine pool- all that does it make more Bromine. Chlorine is cheaper, easier to use and easier to test.
