I have a Jandy 2.7hp ePump. My pool and spa together are ~13250 gallons (flow meter reads 55 gpm). My spa is flush with the pool waterline (has a tile spillway). Additionally, I have a QuickClean in-floor installed. My turn-over rate is 4. I'd like to turnover my pool 2xs per day. So I now I need to run my pump 8 hours per day. My question is....is it better to split my run times -or- run it for the continual 8 hours. If I split it, would be best to split so I can at least 1 turnover each time it runs, or can I set it up, and have it be just as effective, and do partial turns on a more frequent interval. I could split the run to 1on/2off, 2 on/1off, or 4 on/2off. I know starting up a pump is when amperage draw is its highest. So electrically (and thus cost), there is no benefit to split the run. Is there a benefit water quality wise to splitting? Am I overthinking this? Or is there a method to this madness?

G4,

Your problem is that you still believe that old "turnover" myth.. It is just not true. Chemicals keep your pool sanitize and algae free.

Your filter is there is capture all the junk that falls in your pool, it really has nothing to do with keeping algae out of the pool. By the time algae shows up in your filter, it is already too late.

It is your pool and you can run 10 turnovers a 10 if you want, it just will not make any difference.

I guess my point is that you are worried over nothing. You should run your pump to generate the amount of chlorine you need if you are using a tab-feeder or salt system or just to mix the liquid chlorine if using that. The other reason to run the pump is to skim the pool. Normally the time it takes to generate the chlorine you need is plenty.

If you want to run your pump 8 hours a day, just do it and quit trying to use "turnovers" as a requirement.

Thanks,

Hey string !!! My VS pump had 2 times. Summertime and Wintertime (when it was stored in the house). Run the dang thing as low as it will skim 24/7 for $20 a month or less in electric. There is always a trickle ambiance sound by the pool and if a leaf falls in the pool at any time of the day or night it won't have a chance to get waterlogged and sink to the bottom before the pump runs next.

Turnover is a load of hogwash and here is why. Your pool gets different amounts of crud falling in it over the season. In the sping and fall the pollen is crazy but there is next to nothing in the peak season. Your pool needs what filtering that your pool needs based on the enviornment and what month it is. Your neighbor nexdoor has no trees and is upwind of your trees and has an entirely different need. If anyones pool is stupid clear, they can probably lower their filtering time. If the pool is a hair cloudy but the chemistry is fine, they need more filter time. A set # of turnovers for every pool in the world is just crud.

Anywho, i never wanted to think about it so i had two times........
