Help talk me into a stenner

OK-

So I just posted a topic in the water balance forum regarding possibly going back to tabs from liquid due to the large PITA of lugging 2.5 gals of 12.5% bleach. :grrrr: After much appreciated input from those on TFP, trashed that idea.
So, I came across this Stenner thread. Just what I need!! Only lugging jugs once a month or so sounds awesome.
But, of course, I have some thoughts/questions. I currently am adding 80OZ of 12.5% bleach daily to keep my FC btwn 7-9 for my CYA of 60. K2006 FAS-DPD testing daily. I think I'm using approx. 2-3ppm Cl per hot, sunny Fl. day. Working well, clean pool, sore muscles. I currently run my pump 8 hrs a day. My pump is single speed, wired for 220V with a simple on/off switch at the pump location. The pump is fed from an intermatic timer in a small panel in my shed approx. 100 ft from the pool pump. It looks like the stenner 45 series, 10gpd fixed speed pump 100 psi seems to be the go-to on the threads. I'll try to find a 15 gal holding tank.
Does this seem like the correct setup?
Does the stenner have the ability to adjust finely enuf to get my 80 OZ? I think I understood that injecting all your CL in a short burst was better on the pump than running the stenner all day?

Will I have a problem finding a timer I can locate at my pool pumps location where only 220V is avail?

Thanx,

D.

10 gal, fixed rate 100 psi is probably the perfect size for your pool. The fixed rate pump delivers a metered amount for each revolution of the shaft depending on tube size. The specs say the #2 tube is .89oz per minute, you want 80 oz you set your timer to run the pump 90 min per day.

Some say the pump specs might not be exact, but it's not rocket science for this application. Run it 90 min for a few days, if your FC level isn't where you want it adjust the timer to change the dose. A little more or little less is not the end of the world. I've found my output to be very close to spec. Most here who manually dose only pour approximate amounts direct from the gallon, they don't really measure each dose to the ounce.

There are many ways to wire up a timer depending on what you have. If your current timer 100' away shuts off all power to the equipment pad then it could be a problem. The clock on the new timer would need to have power all the time, but you want the stenner to only run with the pool pump. You could eliminate the original timer and provide power to the equipment pad all the time, then add a timer at the equipment pad to control both the pool pump and the stenner.

I use this dual circuit intermatic, it works great and can handle both 120 or 240. I have it wired so timer #1 controls the pool pump and also provides power to timer #2 circuit which controls the stenner. The digital timer allows me to set right to the minute and I can program numerous run times per day very easily. You would need the weatherproof enclosure if it's installed outdoors.

If you must hire the electrical work this could get expensive. In that case you might consider installing a SWG and be done lugging the bleach. A SWG could be simply wired right in with the pump and allow your current timer to operate both. I like my stenner setup but I have strongly considered converting to salt to avoid hauling bleach.

I use a Woods timer that has a battery backup built into it... Believe it or not, I shut the pool down last fall, and killed the power to the equipment pad, and left it out there all winter. When I went back out to open the pool in the spring, the timer was dead on time. I call that a BATTERY BACKUP!

I also purchase my chlorine 55 gallons at a time (Saves me having to lug jugs). I have my 1st barrel buried so just the top is visible (and in a shady spot) next to the equipment pad. From then on, I just siphon into it to refill.

I have a variable flow 45MPH10 that I keep on full speed, and just adjust my timer so that I get the proper amount of chlorine (Bleach) into my pool. I have the pump set to run twice per day at low speed (4 hours per run) the pump starts, the stenner starts up 15 minutes later, and runs for 35 minutes. It works WELL for me, I love it.

Here is a picture of the electrical, that shows the two timers. The one on the left is for the Stenner, the right is the pool pump... You can see the top of the bleach barrel.

And here is a picture taken of behind the electrical that shows the Stenner, and the injection point.

My setup isn't as elegant as some that I have seen... but it works for me. :)

Where do you find 55 gallon drums of chlorine?!?! I'd love that!

I did some searching into where the local pressure washing outfits buy their bleach, and ended up at the local chemical supply company.

They deliver the barrel to my shop, and load it straight into the back of my little pickup for me to bring home. :)

Thanks for the input. I think I will reproduce exactly what you have outlined. I'm gonna take my shed timer out which will run full time 220V out to the pump pad. I'll mount the pump and new timer you suggested on a small wood panel next to the pad. But I have absolutely no idea how to wire all this.

This will power your pool pump with Timer #1 and the Stenner with Timer #2. The stenner will only be able to run when the pool pump is also powered. The built in switch is rated to handle up to a 2hp pump operating on 240v. Be sure to select the timer in the weatherproof enclosure.
