HELP: Pebble Sheen Start Up

Hey all,

We just had our pebble sheen applied on Thursday and Friday of this week and the hose went in to fill her up. Fill finished at about 2am on Saturday (this) morning, but PB is not coming out until Monday morning to start up the equipment. So, what should we be doing during that time?

I have been checking pH, and it appears to be rising (of course) and is sitting around 7.8-8.0 at the moment.

- Should I be concerned about waiting until Monday to start the equipment?
- Should we be adding acid and stiring it around with the brush to bring pH back to normal range?
- Should we be brushing now, or wait until equipment start up?
- We asked PB what type of start up they use, but they didn't know what we were talking about.

Congrats on the new pool. While you wait to follow your builder's instructions for warranty purposes, you can be familiar with our Pool School - Start-up New Plaster so that you are more informed about what might be required. Our weather is still warm. Waiting until Monday with no chlorine is an invitation to algae. Since the installer didn't give the okay to turn on the equipment, I would grab some liquid chlorine (aka regular bleach) to keep the FC around 2-3. Use the PoolMath to calculate. If you have no stabilizer yet, the FC will go quickly, so test again perhaps 2-3x per day until Monday. With no pump moving yet, pour bleach slowly around the perimeter and brush a bit to mix. Do the best you can.

For now, update your signature with all of your pool and equipment info to include which test kit you are using. That will help us.

Thanks for the input. I update my sig to reflect equipment.

I wasn't as worried about the chlorine, but that's a good point. Should I be trying to keep the pH balanced as well? I just don't want to do anything detrimental to my pebble.

One day isn't going to make or break the pH issue. I'd wait for them on Monday. But a little bleach won't hurt. Just enough to keep the algae critters away for the next 24-48 hours or so. Use the PoolMath to set a goal of about 2-3 ppm of FC. Shouldn't take much. If you use bleach, remember to ensure it's plan/regular. Nothing that says splashless, scented or contains any fabric polymers.
