Help me with the Foggy Foggy Blue.

live up here in New England with an in ground pool, opened 2 weeks ago. Its balanced but blue. I shocked it a couple of times and I still see vague shadows in the deep end which just stays foggy. I have brushed the pool a few times and there isn't a hint of green. I have a cartridge filter and I think I will spring for a pool clarifier. I have had this pool for 23 years and never needed one before. what is different now?

While I am here ( I can't leave the house because I am old and not healthy and my family won't let me out) I sent my son get a filter cleaner. Once the pool clears up no matter how it is done I will have to clean the cartridges. He brought back a plastic bottle of Baquacil cleaner which appears to be straight up hydrochloric acid. Sort of scares me. Anyway back to the foggy foggy blue

First of all, you need a good test kit. We recommend the TF-100 or the Taylor K-2006C, linked in my signature below.

You might need a SLAM Process, which is a method of superchlorinating your pool for a period of time to kill off algae. Do an OCLT to see. That's an overnight chlorine loss test. Test your chlorine in the evening evening after the sun is off the pool with a FAS-DPD kit and determine your free chlorine, or FC. Then test again the next morning before the sun gets on the pool and compare the two readings. If your loss is more than 1 ppm overnight, you need to SLAM.

Check FC/CYA Levels to see what your SLAM level is, then start the SLAM. You'll need to test your CYA too.

What are your readings? FC, CC, CYA, pH, TA, CH? How fast are you losing FC? Is there organic material in the pool? What test kit are you using? When is the last time your filter was backwashed?

Could you fill out your signature so we can better help you?
