Help! Is my Jandy 3-way in the correct position?

Hi!

I replaced the salt cell on my pool yesterday. I think I might have placed the 3-way valve in the wrong position when I finished.

My pool has one inlet, one return and the floor drain. I believe thats how the valve should be configured. I know it was either in the position that its in now 90 degrees facing the other way (indicated by the ghosted white overlay).

I had moved it in an attempt to stop the water flow to the cell. I never figured that out and replaced it with the water gushing.

Turing that valve will not stop the water from draining out when you remove your salt cell.

The valve in front of the pump is called the "Intake" or "Suction" valve. When you point the duckbill part of the valve at one of the three pipes, it will stop water from flowing through that pipe.

I assume your intake valve is connected to the skimmer and to your main drain. And of course your pump..

No one here can tell you which side is for the skimmer and which side is for the main drain, but you can easily tell. Just shut off one of the two input pipes by pointing the duckbill right at it. Then go over to your skimmer and see if the water is still being sucked into the pump. If it is, then you will know that the pipe you shut off is going to the main drain. And visa versa.

Once you know which pipe is the main drain, then either set the valve to run skimmer only, or 90% skimmer and 10% main drain. If you shut the main drain off, you will never know...

If you point the handle directly at your pump the main drain and skimmer will be completely open. Looks like one is partially valved off in the pics.

Thank you so much! That all makes sense. I will go try it. Im pretty sure the skimmer is supposed to be full on.

I didnt know that either position was a 90/10 proposition. How do you measure the percentage with that valve.

What are the two scenarios I have illustrated? Are they both 90/10 ratios with one being more drain and the other being more skimmer?

I’m not Jim but yes, 90/10 drain one way 90/10 skimmer the other.

If your pool is higher than your pump, you can prevent the water from flowing via gravity by loosening the screw in the middle of the handle, pulling the handle up over the left or right stop and rotate the valve to shutoff all water to the pump inlet by pointing the “duck bill” at the pump. Same for the returns as well.

I would think the valves in your pictures are in a 75/25 position... You don't need exactly 90/10, it is up to you.

I guess my point is that you want whichever pipe is connected to the skimmer to be open much more than the one from the main drain. The exact amount is up to you.
