I may have two problems. For the last couple of months, I've noticed during the night, a lot of water goes out of our hot tub. It seems to fill back up when the pump comes back on. However, I do think it is taking some water from my pool because I've had to add water. Not totally sure about that, though. Last night, we used the hot tub. I turned off as usual. I went ahead and put a hose in the hot tub to fill it up since water evaporates some when we use it. This morning, I went out there, and a LOT of water is out of the hot tub. It's down below the jet level, and it's like it went into the pool because water is past the grate on the tile (drain) and coming out the drain pipe in the landscaping (or lack thereof :ROFLMAO:). Plus, my pump was supposed to come on at 11:00, and it did not. Is there such a thing that if there's too much water, the pump will not come on? Any other ideas? I've called our pool builder to put me on the schedule for next week, but I don't have a contract with them so I would rather figure this out with you guys. Ideas? I am really concerned that my pump is not coming on.

Thanks,
LaDonna

La-D,

You spa is most likely draining down when the pump is off due to a bad or dirty spa return check valve. This is a very common problem.

Nothing I know of will shut off the pump if the water is too high. That is a different problem.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Ok, which valve do I check - "return check valve"? Thanks!

La-D,

Show us several pics of your equipment pad and we should be able to point it out to you.

Thanks,

Jim R.
Thank you! Our pool just got put in in the fall. So, I watched a video of replacing the return check valve. Hubby has gone to town to get one just before they close. However, in the video, when the guy took the screws out to replace it, there was no water coming out. When I start to take my spa return check valve off, water starts coming out. Is that normal? Also, in the video, the little flapper thing was turned so that when it was down it was to the outside pipes, not the basket. Mine is turned toward the inside piping, not outside. Is that correct? I'm sending pictures. Also, the water is filled all the way to the top in pool pump basket, so I know it doesn't need priming. I'm a little afraid to take the top off all the way because of the water coming out.

La-D,

You should expect water to come out of the check valve, it just depends on the level of the spa and plumbing.

You want the check valve so that water can go from your SWCG and through the check valve to the spa. It should stop water from coming from the Spa and going toward the SWCG.

You can use the manual valve between the SWCG and the check valve to shut off any water coming from the SWCG. If water is coming from the spa, you might have to let the spa drain down before replacing it.

It really depending on if you can quickly remove the old flapper and install the new flapper.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks for your help! I'll just let pool company deal with it. I don't understand my valves, etc., and hubby went to town and they sold him way more than we need - $100+, when I just needed the clear top. So, I don't want to try to use this. I'll deal with it on Monday. Thank you so much for your help. I'll watch the pool people and see what they do.
